# Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 10, 2026

This policy explains what personal data [anime.digital](http://anime.digital) processes, why, with whom it is shared and what rights you have. It covers the whole site at [https://www.anime.digital](https://www.anime.digital): the community forum and the anime database with its watchlists, calendar, statistics and notifications.

## 1. Who is responsible

[anime.digital](http://anime.digital) is operated by:

HANAGASUMI LLC
254 Chapman Rd, Ste 208
Newark, DE 19702
United States

Privacy contact: [privacy@anime.digital](mailto:privacy@anime.digital)
General contact: [contact@anime.digital](mailto:contact@anime.digital)

We are the controller of the personal data described here.

## 2. The short version

- We do not show ads, and we do not sell or share your personal data for advertising.
- We only use cookies that are needed for the site to work. There are no advertising or tracking cookies, so there is no cookie banner.
- Our visitor statistics work without cookies and without building profiles of you.
- Your watchlist and statistics are public by default. You can make them private or hide your profile at any time.
- You can export your anime list and delete your account.

## 3. What we process and why

### 3.1 When you visit the site

Every visit sends technical data to our servers and to Cloudflare, which delivers and protects the site: your IP address, date and time, the page requested, the referring page, and your browser and device type. We use this to deliver pages, to keep the site secure and to stop abuse such as spam, scraping and attacks. Server logs are kept for up to 14 days.

From your IP address we derive your country, using a database stored on our own server, to show which streaming services offer a title where you are. The country is not stored unless you choose one in your settings.

We count visits with two statistics tools that set no cookies and store nothing on your device: Umami and Cloudflare Web Analytics. They tell us which pages are used, from which countries and on which kinds of devices, in aggregated form. When you use certain features (for example searching, adding a title to your list or opening a trailer), an event without your name or account is recorded, which can include the search term you entered.

To find out which titles are being searched for, we keep search terms for 14 days together with a pseudonymous key (a one-way hash of your IP address, or your account ID if you are signed in). To count how many different people look at a title, we keep a marker for one day and daily totals per title for 30 days.

### 3.2 Your account

To create an account you give us a username, an email address and a password (stored only as a secure hash). You can also sign up with Google or Discord; we then receive the identifier, email address and name that the provider shares with us. We do not receive your password for those services.

When you register, log in and use the site, we record the IP address and browser of each login session, so that you can see and end your active sessions and so that we can detect misuse.

You can add more to your profile, such as a picture, a short bio, a location, a website, your time zone and your languages. Profile pictures can be loaded from Gravatar if you have one: we look this up with a one-way hash of your email address.

The sign-up form is protected by hCaptcha, which checks that you are a person and not a bot. For this, hCaptcha receives your IP address and information about your browser and how you interact with the form.

### 3.3 Forum

When you take part in the forum, we process what you write and do there: topics, posts, private messages, likes and reactions, poll votes, bookmarks, flags, the topics you read and for how long, and badges and community points (shown on a public leaderboard). Moderators and administrators can read private messages where this is needed to deal with reports, abuse or legal requests. Moderators can keep internal notes about accounts. We keep a log of the search terms used in the forum search for up to one year.

### 3.4 Anime database and watchlist

When you use the anime features, we store:

- your watchlist: titles, status (for example watching or completed), episode progress, start and finish dates, ratings and personal notes;
- ratings of individual episodes;
- your own lists, with their title, description and visibility;
- favourites, the members you follow and who follows you;
- an activity feed of what you do with titles on your list (for example “started”, “finished”, “rated”), kept for 365 days;
- statistics calculated from your list;
- your settings, such as the language for anime titles, your streaming country and your notification choices;
- your progress through the welcome steps, and which page you added a title from (used only in aggregated form to improve the site).

If you import a list, we read the file you upload (for example a MyAnimeList export). If you import from AniList, we send the AniList username you enter to AniList to fetch your public list. You can export your list at any time.

If you suggest or make changes to the catalogue (for example correcting a title or a date), we keep these contributions and a history of changes, so that it stays clear how the catalogue came to say what it says. Detailed revisions are deleted after six months; accepted contributions remain part of the catalogue.

### 3.5 Notifications, emails and push messages

- **In-site notifications:** when a new episode of a title you are watching comes out, or a planned title or a sequel starts, you get a notification on the site. You can switch these off.
- **Emails:** we send emails that you need for your account (confirmation, password reset, login links) and notifications you have chosen. The weekly overview of new episodes is only sent if you turned it on. It contains links that let you mark an episode as seen without logging in; these links are signed, belong to your account and expire after 30 days. You can unsubscribe in every email and in your settings. Emails are sent through Brevo.
- **Push messages:** if you allow notifications in your browser, we send push messages through the push service of your browser maker (for example Google, Mozilla, Apple or Microsoft). You can withdraw this permission at any time in your browser or in your settings.

### 3.6 Spam protection and AI

To keep the forum free of spam and to make it readable in several languages, we use AI services, in particular from OpenAI:

- **Spam detection:** new posts can be checked automatically. A suspected spam post is hidden until a moderator reviews it; the final decision is made by people.
- **Sentiment analysis:** posts can be classified by tone to help moderators find heated discussions.
- **Translation:** posts and topics can be translated automatically into the languages the site offers.

For this, the text of the post is sent to the AI provider. We do not use AI to make decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects on you.

### 3.7 Embedded content

Trailers come from YouTube. A trailer is only loaded when you click on it; from then on YouTube (Google) receives your IP address and may store information in your browser. We use YouTube’s privacy-enhanced mode.

Information about titles, images and streaming availability comes from sources such as TMDB, JustWatch, AniList and AnimeSchedule. We store this information on our own server; no personal data about you is sent to these sources (except the AniList import described above).

## 4. What others can see

- Your username, profile and forum posts are public, like on any forum.
- Your watchlist, statistics and favourites are public by default. Signed-in members can follow you and see what you do with titles on your list in their activity feed; the person you follow is notified. You can make your watchlist private, and you can hide your whole profile in your settings; your list, statistics and activity are then hidden from others too.
- Your own lists are visible according to the setting you choose for each list.

## 5. Legal bases

If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, we rely on these legal bases:

- **Contract** (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR): to provide your account and the features you use.
- **Legitimate interests** (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR): to run, secure and improve the site, to prevent spam and abuse, for aggregated statistics, to translate content, and to keep catalogue contributions. Our interest is a safe, useful and multilingual community site; we keep the impact on you small by collecting little and using tools without tracking cookies.
- **Consent** (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR): for the weekly email, push messages and optional profile data. You can withdraw consent at any time with effect for the future.
- **Legal obligation** (Art. 6(1)(c) GDPR): where we must keep or disclose data by law.

If you are in Brazil, the corresponding legal bases under the LGPD (Law No. 13,709/2018) are the performance of a contract, legitimate interest, consent and compliance with a legal obligation (Art. 7).

## 6. Cookies and storage on your device

We only use storage that is needed for the site to work:

| Name | Purpose | Duration |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `_forum_session` | keeps your session and protects forms | until you close the browser |
| `_t` | keeps you logged in | until you log out, or 60 days after your last visit |
| short-lived sign-in cookies | remember where to return to during sign-up and login | minutes |
| browser storage (local storage) | settings such as collapsed menu sections, and a title you chose to add before signing up | until you clear it; the title for 24 hours |

hCaptcha may store data in your browser on the sign-up page to tell people from bots. YouTube may do so once you play a trailer. Our statistics tools use no cookies.

## 7. Service providers and other recipients

We use these providers. They process data on our behalf, or, for login providers and embedded content, as independent controllers under their own policies:

| Provider | Purpose | Location |
| --- | --- | --- |
| netcup GmbH | server hosting | Germany |
| Cloudflare, Inc. | content delivery, protection against attacks, Web Analytics | USA, worldwide network |
| Sendinblue SAS (Brevo) | sending emails | France |
| Umami Software, Inc. | visitor statistics without cookies | USA |
| OpenAI, L.L.C. | spam detection, sentiment analysis, translation | USA |
| Intuition Machines, Inc. (hCaptcha) | bot protection at sign-up | USA |
| Google LLC | sign-in with Google (optional); YouTube trailers (after a click) | USA |
| Discord Inc. | sign-in with Discord (optional) | USA |
| Automattic Inc. (Gravatar) | profile pictures (optional) | USA |
| Browser push services (Google, Mozilla, Apple, Microsoft) | delivering push messages (optional) | USA, EU |
| AniList | list import (only if you use it) | not specified by the provider |

We may disclose data if the law requires it, to enforce our terms, or to protect the rights, safety or property of our members or others. If the site or the company is transferred, your data may pass to the new operator, who must keep to this policy.

## 8. International data transfers

HANAGASUMI LLC is based in the United States. Our servers are in Germany, and some providers are in the United States or other countries. Our administrators may access data from other countries. Where data from the EEA, the UK or Switzerland is transferred to a country without an adequacy decision, we rely on appropriate safeguards, in particular the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses or a provider’s certification under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework. For data of people in Brazil, international transfers follow Art. 33 of the LGPD.

## 9. How long we keep data

| Data | How long |
| --- | --- |
| Server logs with IP addresses | up to 14 days |
| Search terms for search trends | 14 days |
| Page view markers / daily view counts per title | 1 day / 30 days |
| Activity feed entries | 365 days |
| Detailed catalogue revisions | 6 months |
| Forum search log | up to 1 year |
| Email delivery logs | 90 days |
| Accounts that were never confirmed | 14 days |
| Account, profile, list and settings | until you delete your account |
| Backups | deleted data can remain in backups for up to about 5 weeks |

When your account is deleted, your watchlist, notes, ratings, own lists, statistics, favourites, follows, activity and notifications are deleted with it. Forum posts are either deleted or kept under an anonymous name, so that discussions stay readable; tell us if you want them deleted. Catalogue contributions remain, but no longer name you. If your account is anonymized instead, your list stays with the anonymous account and your personal notes and list descriptions are removed.

## 10. Your rights

You have the right to:

- get a copy of your personal data (access and portability). You can download your anime data yourself on your watchlist page (“Export list”): your list with notes and dates, episode ratings, your own lists and your catalogue contributions. For your forum data and anything else, write to us;
- have incorrect data corrected; most of it you can change yourself in your settings;
- have your data deleted. Depending on your activity, you can delete your account yourself in your settings; otherwise write to us;
- restrict processing or object to processing based on legitimate interests;
- withdraw consent at any time.

Write to [privacy@anime.digital](mailto:privacy@anime.digital). We will answer within 30 days. We may need to confirm that the request comes from you.

You can also complain to a data protection authority, in particular in the country where you live or work. In the EU this is your national supervisory authority; in the UK, the Information Commissioner’s Office; in Brazil, the ANPD.

**United States:** we do not sell personal information and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising. Residents of states with privacy laws can exercise the rights those laws provide by writing to us; we will not treat you differently for doing so.

## 11. Children

The site is not intended for children under 13, and you must be at least 13 years old to create an account. In some countries, including in the EU, a higher minimum age (up to 16) applies to consent to online services; if you are below that age where you live, you need the permission of a parent or guardian. If we learn that a child under 13 has created an account, we will delete it.

## 12. Security

Connections to the site are encrypted (HTTPS). Passwords are stored only as secure hashes. Access to personal data is limited to the people who run the site. No system is completely secure, but we work to protect your data and will inform you and the authorities of a breach where the law requires it.

## 13. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when the site or the law changes. We will post the new version here with a new date. For substantial changes we will inform registered members by email or with a notice on the site.

## 14. Languages

This policy is available in several languages. If the versions differ, the English version applies.
